My translations are based on five years experience as a lawyer in an international U.S. law firm and twelve years experience as an independent translator. I translate from German into my mother tongue English. I deliver an English document such as an American lawyer would produce to achieve, as closely as possible, the same economic and legal effect as the German document produces, leaving differences in the relevant legal systems transparent. The documents I translate are governed mainly by German or European law, but I have also translated documents under Swiss, Austrian, and Liechtenstein law.
I develop a consistent vocabulary for each document or set of related documents, remain sensitive to the legal connotations of my terminology, and employ the terminology used in relevant legislation or case law as appropriate. This is important particularly in the context of EU law, where a great body of legal translations and a context-specific terminology sometimes deviating from US and anglo-saxon practice have been accumulated.
I produce a document that can be negotiated and signed in English. I guaranty confidentiality and will meet agreed upon deadlines.Contact Darrell Wilkins

I earned my J.D. (doctor of laws) at the University of Virginia in 1996 and was admitted to the Bar of New York in the same year. I practiced law at Shearman & Sterling from 1996 – 2001, working three years in the New York office and two years in the Frankfurt am Main office. My specialty was securities law in the fields of corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions. Since 2001, I have lived and worked in Berlin as a writer and independent translator.
I have acquired expertise translating legal documents in a broad range of contexts, including administrative filings as well as litigation, real estate, transactional, and disclosure documents.
In 2009, I translated Dr. Martin Heidenhain’s European State Aid Law Handbook, published by the C.H. Beck Verlag and co-published in the U.K. and North America by Hart Publishing, Oxford.
